A Viewer Speaks

Wed, 02 Apr 2008 08:05:29 PDT
WE GET A good group of commenters here in Sticksville. Lately, we've been hearing quite a bit from a young woman from the Prairies, who has an openminded attitude toward Canadian shows, and an engaged and passionate way of defending them. On the subject of all the changes going on at the CBC, I think she's expressed the necessary corrective point of view better than Richard Stursberg, Kirstine Leyfield, or anybody else at the public broadcaster has managed to do. So I'm bumping her comment here

Three new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg polls show close primary races in Pennsylvania and Indiana, with Barack Obama posting a strong lead in North Carolina -- bad news for Hillary Clinton, as she at least needs good-sized wins in Pennsylvania and...

The GDP is rising, Productivity is Increasing—and Still Workers Wages Fall

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 15:21:17 PDT
Former labor secretary Robert Reich recently blogged about those recent comments of Obama which have been so distorted over the last several days. The point was to take the media to task for their superficial coverage. An interesting read. But what really caught my eye was the way he introduced the topic. I was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, 61 years ago. My father sold $1.98 cotton blouses to blue-collar women and women whose husbands worked in factories. Years later, I was secretary of lab

CBS Democratic Primary Debate in Philly

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 08:59:03 PDT
ABC handled this debate in a very admirable way, and I think both candidates supporters should have been satisfied with the fairness of the debate, for a change. This is how journalists should handle debates. Both got hit with three very tough issues, some of which have been dominating the news, then they moved on to the issues.

Taking a break from our little NARA-thon, in other news: As you probably heard ages ago, Flickr now allow uploads of videos under 90 seconds in length. You can read brief posts on it at LibrarianInBlack and Hanging Together. Today on her blog, Alone in the Archives, Linda Clark Benedict wrote that she got her first reference question via Meebo IM on the Archives page. Congrats! Maybe we can coax her into writing a little more about this. Anyone else using IM in their archives? I’ve got a post

Francis Ford Coppola now calling Buenos Aires home (The Post and Courier)

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 21:03:26 PDT
The maestro has gone gaucho. Francis Ford Coppola, 68, believes he's finally where he's supposed to be, a place where he can revel in financial and artistic control. Yes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, land of comparatively low production costs and much cultural ferment, especially the streets of this cosmopolitan capital. A city, one might add, with a large Italian community dating back to the early ...

Government health care = increased deaths

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 09:38:19 PDT
Prostate cancer deaths fall four times faster in US By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor Thursday, 17 April 2008 A dramatic fall in deaths from prostate cancer in the US has raised questions about Britain’s poor performance against the commonest cancer in men. Deaths from the disease have declined four times faster in the US than in the UK over the past decade, having peaked in both countries in the early 1990s at almost identical rates. Specialists claim that a combination of screenin

Kristy Lee Cook Leaves American Idol 2008

It's now down to the Top 6 in American Idol 2008.
Last night, and as expected, one of the girls was voted off the show and it was Oregonian Kristy Lee Cook!
Kristy and two other girls were in the danger zone yesterday ... they got the lowest number of votes for their not so good performances of Mariah Carey's songs the night before.
Kristy stood there, side by side with Syesha Mercado and Brooke White.
After her elimination, Kristy Lee playfully sat on the judges' table right in front of Simon Cowell and serenaded him with her performance of Mariah's song 'Forever'.

Next week, the Top 6 will battle it out with Phantom of the Opera composer Andrew Lloyd Webber! That's gotta be hard!
